Social Prescribing
Social prescribing connects people to community, creativity and connection - because wellbeing is built in everyday life.
What is Social Prescribing?
Social prescribing is an approach to health and wellbeing that recognises that not all challenges can be addressed through medicine or clinical care alone. It works by connecting people to non-medical supports in their community - such as creative activities, social groups, movement, learning, or time in shared spaces like a community cafe - that help strengthen connection, purpose and everyday wellbeing. At its core, social prescribing is about responding to the whole person, not just symptoms, and valuing relationships, belonging and community as essential contributors to health.

Social prescribing is an innovative model in which GPs, psychologists and other health professionals can ‘prescribe’ activities, groups and community supports as part of a health plan - recognising that many health and wellbeing needs stem from social, emotional or practical issues that medication alone can’t address.

Holy Grounds is a social enterprise cafe that goes beyond coffee - offering volunteer opportunities, hosting regular sessions and programs, and running one‑off community events. As part of the Chatty Cafe scheme, we train volunteers to make conversation with customers and stock the cafe with conversation prompts.
Holy Grounds is a welcoming space where the community is both the focus and the shaper of what happens here. People of all abilities, identities and backgrounds are welcome, and our activities are free with no obligation to purchase - you’re also welcome to bring your own lunch. Whether you drop in for a session, join a program, or just want to connect over a coffee, Holy Grounds is a place to belong, participate, and be part of something shaped by everyone who walks through the door.
Being listed on the Australian Disease Management Association’s Map of Social Prescribing Services reflects our role as a community space where people can be referred not for treatment, but for connection - to others, to place, and to a sense of belonging.
